CONFERENCE OVERVIEW
CHI-SA 2005 will be held in the Gauteng Province, South Africa. Our conference theme focuses on the challenge for technology to make people feel safe, and to support a safe community worldwide and specifically in Southern Africa. As a community of professionals in interactive systems design, we are responsible for creating and shaping a “safe” future. Recent international and local events have contributed to many people being scared of technology. However, technology should be designed in such a way that it reinforces a sense of community and allows people to feel at ease with the use of technology. One of the major challenges to the HCI community in
Southern Africa is developing complex interactive information systems, which can be used by our unique user population. Hence, CHI-SA 2005 will focus on the interactive relationships between Safety, Technology and Community.
